Patio Umbrella Stand - Tips for Getting the Right Size

It would be nice if outdoor patio umbrellas would come as a set that included a patio umbrella base. That way you wouldn't be wondering what size or weight you should get. There are a couple of factors that play an important role in getting the right base for your situation. That's why it is not surprising that many people purchase the wrong size outdoor umbrella stand. 

Most people just go to their local home improvement store and buy one off the shelf that looks the most attractive to them without any consideration as to whether it will be sufficient enough to hold down their patio umbrella.

In order to secure your outdoor umbrella and to prevent it from tipping over in the wind it is important that the weight of your umbrella base be sufficient.

The size of your stand is determined by the size of your outdoor umbrella. Here are some general recommendations:

For a 6 to 7.5 ft umbrella in a table use 35 lbs or less

For a  7.5 to 9 ft umbrella in a table use 40 to 55 lbs f

For a 9 to 11 foot umbrella in a table us 65 to 75 lbs

The next determining factor is where will the umbrella be used.

Free standing patio umbrellas require more weight than one that is going through a table like this one pictured. The suggested weight for a freestanding umbrella is 100+ lbs.

More weight is also recommended when using an umbrella where it is windy or if it has a tilt feature.
